Designed by Sabina Savage, Secrets of the Bison is a richly layered cashmere shawl inspired by American history, folk art, and the profound symbolism of the American bison. The central motif draws from the dioramas of the American Museum of Natural History and reflects on the commercial decimation of the bison—from an estimated 60 million to just 541 by 1889—an act tied to the subjugation of Native American populations. The year 1876, when the last bison in Oklahoma County was killed, is noted within the design.
The artwork incorporates elements inspired by hand-laboured American folk art, including weathervanes and carved decoys, alongside references to hand-painted Parcheesi boards from the Civil War era—objects often decorated with rural homesteads and symbols of a simpler life. Throughout the design, motifs drawn from fraternal society imagery are re-imagined as symbols of reverence for the natural world.
Key symbols include the Eye of Providence, the beehive flag representing collective responsibility, the tent flag symbolizing protection for all species, and two pillars signifying the strength and stability required to safeguard the earth.
