Designed by Sabina Savage, The Wolf You Feed draws inspiration from history, folklore, and humanity’s evolving relationship with the natural world. The central motif references the dioramas of the American Museum of Natural History and reflects on the near-extirpation of the gray wolf in the United States—driven by fear, prejudice, and human intervention.
The title alludes to an ancient Cherokee legend: within every person live two wolves—one driven by anger and resentment, the other by kindness and compassion. The wolf that prevails is the one we choose to feed. The date 1872, set within the design, marks the creation of Yellowstone National Park, a turning point that later enabled the reintroduction of the wild gray wolf.
The artwork incorporates fraktur folk art influences, including an imaginative fusion of saguaro and desert cacti framing the central scene. Symbolic motifs drawn from fraternal society imagery—such as the Eye of Providence, the golden fleece, and pillars of strength—are reinterpreted as emblems of reverence for nature. Additional details reference 19th-century hand-painted Parcheesi boards, while the presence of the naïve chipmunk alludes to a second, cautionary legend.
