Designed by Sabina Savage, Secrets of the Bison is a richly symbolic silk scarf inspired by the quiet power and dignity of the American bison. The design references October 3rd, 1876—a pivotal moment in history marking the near-extinction of the species—and reflects on humanity’s responsibility to protect the natural world.
Influenced by the dioramas of the American Museum of Natural History, the artwork weaves together hand-laboured American folk art elements, including weathervanes, carved decoys, and hand-painted Parcheesi boards from the Civil War era. Symbolic flags and motifs drawn from fraternal society imagery are re-imagined as emblems of reverence for the earth.
Key symbols include the Eye of Providence, a beehive representing collective responsibility, a tent symbolizing protection for all species, and two pillars signifying strength and stability.
